BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has recalled the martyrdom of language heroes on the eve of International Language Day.
In a statement issued on Friday, she said: “The supreme sacrifice of the martyrs of the language movement on February 21, 1952 became an epitome for the inspiration of sustaining self-consciousness and self-dignity as a nation.”
Terming the day as “a significant day” for the nation, she added: “February 21 was such an epoch-making incident that it has been immortalised and recognised globally as International Mother Language Day. We as a nation feel proud today that the supreme sacrifice of our language movement is being much admired, remembered, and honoured worldwide.”
She also wished the success of the programmes undertaken by different social, cultural, and political organisations to mark the day.
Khaleda also called upon her party members to be united, and wage a tougher movement, drawing inspiration from the language movement.
In the same statement, she called for the safety and security of lives, and ensuring people's freedom of expression and democratic rights.
