Mamata: No worries, keep faith in me

Visiting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked the people of Bangladesh to have faith in her about sharing the Teesta's water.

"We have some problems on this issue and so do you [Bangladesh]," she said about Teesta water, in a meeting with cultural figures in Bangladesh and West Bengal at Hotel Sonargaon on Friday afternoon,

Requesting all not to worry about the issue, she added: "Please keep confidence in me. As I am here, I will talk with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the issue."

She then added: "We both [countries] own the waters of the Padma, Meghna, Ganga, and Jamuna. I do not see any partition here. No one will be able to divide us."

The West Bengal chief minister arrived in Dhaka Thursday night on a three-day visit, while the water flow in the disputed, shared river Teesta has been weakening with time.

However, the Bangladeshi leadership hopes the visit will pave the way in resolving two long-pending issues with India – the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) and the sharing of Teesta water.

Bangladesh and India were scheduled to sign the Teesta agreement in 2011, during the visit of the then Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, but it did not happen because of strong resistance from the West Bengal chief minister.
