Health DG: Deaths at Osmani hospital normal

Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Deen Muhammad Nurul Haque has termed the deaths of 10 children at Osmani Medical Hospital as a normal incident.

He made the statement while addressing the media regarding the incident at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.

He said: “The children died normally. Four of them died due to diseases caused from the complexity of their mothers during their pregnancy period, three from septicaemia with malnutrition, one for intestine problem, two for Diarrhoea and broncho-pneumonia.”

Regarding the deaths of 22 others, he said: “Four died in brain stroke, three in acute heart attack, two in normal heart attack, one each in tuberculosis, diabetic, unknown poison, brain infection, anaemia.”

He added that five people who critically injured in a clash died at the while three died in incidents of assault and accidents.

State Minister for Health Affairs Jahid Mallek said: “The probe team will investigate if there was any incident of negligence regarding the matter.”

“We will take all the necessary steps regarding it if such things are proven against the authorities of the hospital,” he said.

Ten children, including five newborns, died in 24 hours at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, twenty-two other people died  at the hospital from various diseases and road accidents.
