Sean Lee: Photography is a part of me

Sean Lee is a talented photographer who lives and works in Singapore. In his photography career, he has already garnered awards and solo shows, including the Discovery Award at the Arles Photo Festival, the Special Jury Prize at the Angkor Photo Festival, and the Icon de Martell Cordon Bleu, a photography prize that recognises the most outstanding artist in Singapore.

His work titled “Two People” is on exhibit at the ongoing photography festival Chobi Mela VIII. In a conversation with the Dhaka Tribune, Lee shared how he was drawn to this specific form of art.

“I discovered photography when I was 18 years old, and became fascinated with it. I eventually joined the army, but later I became a speaking assistant and then a photography assistant for about two years. That is when I started taking pictures.”

What inspires him? “Nothing in particular,” he said. “It was a fluke that I came upon this profession, and now I like it. I would rather say I am a big fan of stand-up comedy, which has inspired to me to do something similar in photography. So, I try to use photography to gather experiences and create a realm of comfort for the viewers – much like comedy.”

Talking about “Two People,” Lee said: “To me, it is a personal view. I think the best thing about this work is that, when we look at those pictures, we realise how it looks like when we interact with our families.”

Asked why the photographs’ were only black and white, he said: “There is no reason. I just wanted to capture some of my family’s intimate moments. For this series, they came to me in black and white, and I thought it was best to go along with that. But I take colour photographs too.”

How connected is he with his art? “It is a part of me – like my arms and legs. I see it as a being. The essence of it is something I feel within me – a touch of serenity.

“It is not enough for me to just capture images. I want my images to make me as well.”

Asked what he thought about coming here for the festival, he said: “This is my first visit in Bangladesh and I like it a lot. I love the festival and am very grateful to be here. In fact, I can see enough good things in this Chobi Mela and the arrangement is really excellent. I am very thankful to everyone who put this festival together. They have done a fantastic job.”

“Two People” is being exhibited at the Daily Star–Bengal Arts Precinct, one of the extended venues of Chobi Mela VIII.
