Bangladesh is well poised to become a model country to develop a comprehensive and universal civil registry, Planning Minister Mustafa Kamal has said.
He was addressing the Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok yesterday.
He was elected as the chair of the conference, a rare honour for Bangladesh and a testament to the impressive work that Bangladesh has put in to establish a robust and sustainable CRVS system.
Globally, CRVS has become an important issue for the post-2015 sustainable peace and development agenda. It deals with registration of vital events of a citizen’s life such as birth, death, cause of death, marriage, divorce and adoption.
Under the theme “Get everyone in the picture,” the five-day conference is co-organised by several UN agencies, the World Bank Group and prominent international civil society organisations.
The minister yesterday also held a bilateral discussion with the Indian state minister for home affairs. Both ministers agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of solar energy, wave energy and railway connectivity.
The week-long conference ends today.
