Two officials suspended over Bhairab fertiliser theft

Two officials of Bhairab warehouse of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) have been suspended over the stealing of fertiliser in the warehouse.

The officials are Rezaul Karim, acting assistant director of the warehouse; and warehouse keeper Khorshed Alam.

Ali Ajgor, manager (sales) of BADC Kishoreganj main office, confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the suspension.

A case was filed against the duo in this connection. Assistant Director of Kishoreganj BADC warehouse Shahidullah Sheikh filed the case with Bhairab police station on Sunday.

“It seems that the stealing of the fertiliser worth Tk7.30 crore took place over a period of time,” said Shahidullah Sheikh. BADC chairman Anwarul Haque visited the spot on Monday afternoon.

Manager Ali Ajgor informed that the Bhairab warehouse was reopened in 2007, after its closure in 2005.

Khorshed and Rezaul had been working there since 2007 and 2013 respectively, he said.

"Rezaul informed Kishoreganj BADC main office on November 11 that there was less fertiliser in the warehouse. As per estimate, 1,525 tonnes of TSP, 800 tonnes of DOP and 2,971 of tonnes of MoP fertiliser were supposed to be deposited in the warehouse. But it was found that 1,463 tonnes of TSP; 632 tonnes of DOP and 2,231 tonnes of MoP were missing there," he added.

Rezaul and Khorshed managed to flee after the disclosure of the occurrence and their cell phones were found switched off, said Badrul Alam Talukdar, officer-in-charge of Bhairab police station.
