The government will launch a countrywide special drive against unfit vehicles and drivers without licenses from November 10.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the decision at a coordination meeting on road safety, road transport and overall activities at BRTA office in the capital on Sunday.
BRTA chairman Md Nazrul Islam and officials of ministry and BRTA were present in the meeting.
Obaidul said instead of Motor Vehicle Ordinance-1983, an updated Road Transport Act-2014 is being formulated.
The draft would be sent within three months to place in the cabinet meeting.
Increased fine and punishment have been proposed in the draft, he added.
The minister also said plates with digital numbers have been handed over to BRTA for setting them up in 64 districts.
Under the same project, establishment of 12 RFDI stations in Dhaka Metropolitan area has been completed.
An addition of 4,50,000 retro-reflective number plates have been finished.
After a tragic road accident in Natore on October 23, a special drive was conducted at the depot of Keya Paribhan in the capital's Kallyanpur.
BRTA fined Tk1,00,000 for 15 unfit buses of Keya Paribhan. Executive of Keya Paribhan was sentenced to two months, and fined Tk7,000 by the mobile court.
According to BRTA, there are 21,00,000 registered transports across the country. Of them, 11,00,000 are motor cycles and the number of bus, mini-bus and trucks are 10,00,000.
BRTA has provided 14,31,000 driving licenses.
