The farmers who use chemicals and insecticides on farming food crops are also causing harm to the food chain and country’s environment along with the ultra-profit makers and food adulterants.
The speakers made the remarks on Saturday while discussing a seminar on "Organic Food: Consumers' Health, Bio-diversity and Environment" organised by the Voluntary Consumers Training & Awareness Society (VOCTA).
Despite having no crisis of food in Bangladesh, the people are in health threat now-a-days, they said.
The seminar was held at the National Press Club in the capital with VOCTA's Chairman Muhammad Ali Zinnah in the chair.
Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute’s post harvest organic specialist Dr M Nazim Uddin presented the keynote paper on the issue.
Former President of Japan Veterinary Association Dr Uemura Takashi, Dhaka University Professor Dr Helal Uddin Shekhar, Chief Scientist of Dhaka University's Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences Dr Latiful Bari, General Secretary of Bangladesh Seeds Association Asadul Amin, President of Thakurgaon Chamber Habibul Islam Bablu and VOCTA's Executive Director Khalilur Rahman Sajal and GC member Saidul Abedin Dollar discussed the seminar.
The discussants claimed: “The farmers who are using chemicals and insecticides in their crops are doing harm to the biodiversity. It should be resisted.
To resist them and the process, the formers, traders and consumers must be united.”
At the same time, in a bid to ensure the supply of safe food for the people, everyone should work hard to popularise the non-chemical organic food farming system, they suggested.
