DUTA denounces education minister's remarks

Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) has denounced Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid's recent remarks on the university's admission process.

Nahid termed Dhaka University’s first year admission  process as 'faulty' amid the talks over the unprecedented fail rate in the admission test following record pass rate in the HSC (the terminal examination of the college level).

The DUTA, in a press release issued on Tuesday signed by the association's leaders, has denounced the education minister's recent remarks.

The DUTA leaders termed the remarks of the education minister 'disappointing'.

Refuting the minister's speech, it was said in the press release, the admission test was not taken to 'harass' students; rather the main goal of the test was to sort out the best eligible students for the university.

It was claimed in the press release that the admission system of the university is 'widely accepted' and 'efficiently carried out.'

The university is run under the 1973 Ordinance and the Academic Council is given the responsibility to decide upon the admission system, the release reads.

It says the teachers' association would welcome any idea for the sake of betterment of the process.

The DUTA, however, requested everybody to refrain from making any 'unwise' comments in this regard.
