TIB: Proposed amendment may curtail ACC’s power

The Transparency International Bangladesh has voiced concern as the government recently took an initiative  to amend the Anti-Corruption Commission Law 2013 with giving the police power to investigate money laundering and corruption cases alongside the ACC.

It has also urged the government to amend the law after consulting stakeholders and experts.

Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman in a statement yesterday said the anti-graft watchdog was already facing trouble dealing with different cases and during investigation.

“If the police are given power to look into corruption and money laundering cases, the ACC will have to face more problems, ultimately resulting in more difficulties for them,” the statement says.

“If the ACC becomes weak, it will be difficult for the government to ensure rule of law and combat corruption. As a member of international anti-corruption convention, the government should take steps to make the ACC stronger and more active.”
