Medical team to be deployed at city’s cattle markets

The government has decided to deploy medical teams at the city’s major cattle markets to check health of the sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The medical teams will work at the entrance of the cattle markets, Fisheries and Livestock secretary Nur Ali . He said the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry has issued necessary directives in this regard, he said.

At least 12 medical teams will be deployed in the 18 cattle markets of the capital to examine fitness of the sacrificial animals.

Besides, medical teams, led by district and upazila livestock officers, will work at the cattle markets in their respective areas.

Earlier, on Monday, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking its directives on the government to appoint veterinary doctors for all cattle markets in the capital this year to examine health of the sacrificial animals.

Every year, artificially fattened cattle, especially cow, are sold as sacrificial animals at the cattle markets.

Allegations are rife that a section of traders use steroid (one kind of hormone group medicine) such as Dexamithason, Cortisol, Bitamithason, Hydrocortison and Ciproheptadine to fatten the cattle to earn high profit.

However, doctors cautioned that people consuming meat of artificially fattened cattle will be affected with various diseases, some critical.
