Tofail: Essentials market to remain stable before Eid

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said the prices of essential commodities will remain stable during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha as “there are sufficient stock.”

“Compared to the demand, we have sufficient stock of edible oil, onion, garlic, ginger, lentil and sugar. So the prices will be under control,” he said at a meeting with businessmen in the Secretariat yesterday.

The meeting was held to exchange views with the traders on the situation of essential commodity market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Commerce minister said the government was able to contain the market of essentials throughout last Ramadan and hoped this would also be possible before the Eid-ul-Azha.

“A lot of imports are in the pipeline, and the government is trying to ensure sufficient supply against the demand,” Tofail Ahmed said.

He urged the business community to help the government keep the prices of essentials stable not only during Eids but also throughout the year. “We are committed to ensure stable prices of essentials throughout the year,” he asserted.

In response to the minister’s call, the businessmen assured him of all-out cooperation and support to maintain adequate supply and keep the prices stable.

The meeting was attended by, among others, Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Md Abul Hossain Mian and Chairman of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh Brigadier General Sarwar Jahan Talukder.

Representatives from Bangladesh Bank, FBCCI and DCCI were also present.
