Singer Nancy at Labaid, out of danger

Popular singer Nazmun Monira Nancy, who allegedly attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills on Saturday night, was shifted yesterday morning from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital to the Labaid Specialised Hospital.

Nancy fell sick at her father’s residence in Chhotogara of Netrakona district town after overdosing on sleeping pills. However, she is now out of danger and recovering quickly, doctors said.

Her brother Jony said she had been under the observation of Dr Forhad.

Earlier, after Nancy took the pills, her family first took her to a private clinic in Netrokona and then to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. As her condition was not improving, doctors suggested that she should be taken to DMCH.

Nancy’s brother, however, alleged that she was not getting satisfactory treatment and they therefore shifted her to the capital. But our Mymensingh correspondent reported that her condition was stable until 10pm Saturday. She was shifted to the ICU there after which the doctors at MMCH asked the family members to take her to the capital.

At MMCH, Nancy told doctors that she had taken 60 sleeping pills in two phases around 1pm on Saturday. The doctors there said since the medicine had already mixed with her blood, washing out the stomach was not working.

A doctor at DMCH said family members took Nancy from DMCH saying that she would be taken to her Rampura house for rest, but the relatives took her to Labaid instead.

Labaid Specialised Hospital’s Assistant General Manager Saifur Rahman Lenin said: “Nancy has recovered well but she is still weak. This is called withdrawal syndrome. We have shifted her to the ICU and she will be fine within two or three days.”
