Fazilatunnesa Mujib's 84th birth anniversary today

Today is the 84th birth anniversary of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

To mark the day, the ruling Awami League along with other like-minded social and political organisation will hold various day-long programmes.

The party will place wreaths at her grave at Banani graveyard at 8:30am and organise a special prayers for the salvation of her departed soul.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Fazilatunnesa Mujib, will attend a discussion in the capital's Osmani Memorial Auditorium at 10:00am organised to mark her birth anniversary.

The Awami Leagues's Dhaka City units will also organise a milad mahfil after Ashr prayer at Bangabandhu Avenue.

Begum Mujib was kept under house arrest during the liberation war by Pakistani army until December 17, 1971, a day after the country was liberated.

She was killed along with Bangabandhu and most of her family members by a disgruntled group of army officers on August 15, 1975. Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana are her two surviving children.

Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, nicknamed Renu, was born in Tungipara in GopalGanj in 1930. Her early schooling was in a missionary school but later she did home schooling.

She lost her parents at the age of five and was raised by her future mother-in-law, mother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She was married to Bangabandhu at the age of 11 and had three sons and two daughters.

She was killed on the night of August 15, 1975 along with her husband Bangabandhu and his three sons.

Fazilatunnessa was also know for leadership skills. Whenever Bangabandhu was in jail for political reasons, she would keep contact with the Awami League leadership and give guidance in her husband’s absence.
