Joint committee to monitor Rooppur nuclear plant work

The government is set to form a joint coordination committee (JCC) consisting six members from Bangladesh and Russia to monitor all works of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project (RNPP).

“To implement the project properly, the committee will be formed. We will visit Russia from July 21 to 23 to form the committee and will hold a meeting there,” State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The JCC’s main role would be to make all preparations regarding the procurement of the reactor, safety issues and supervision of general construction of the RNPP, he said.

The committee members would include the state minister or the secretary of Science and Technology Ministry, the chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and a ministry official. The other three committee members will include officials from the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom).

Rosatom will build, operate and provide fuel to the plant and take its waste back to Russia regularly. The total cost of the proposed plant has been estimated at between $5bn and $6bn.

Bangladesh expects to add 2,000MW of electricity to the national grid by 2021 from the nuclear plant at Rooppur with Russia’s support.
