Bridge collapse suspends Khagrachhari-Chittagong communication

The communication between Khagrachhari-Chittagong has snapped as a bailey bridge, adjacent to Manikchhari bazar, was collapsed on Friday afternoon.

Quoting locals, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Ramgorh circle) Mohammad Shahjahan said: “The bridge was collapsed around 12.30pm, while a Chittagong-bound stone-laden truck was crossing it.”

“Locals rescued some 10-12 micro bus passengers, who were injured and sent them in nearby Manikchhari Upazila Health Complex for treatment, ASP Shahjahan added”.

When contacted, Executive Engineer of Khagrachhari Roads and Highway Department Mohammad Ismail Hossain said: “The bridge was collapsed as it was expired some five to seven years ago.”

“The government has already taken project to turn the entire bailey bridge into a concrete-made one. We will repair the bridge as early as possible,” he added.
