At least veven people have been killed and 30 others injured by separate incidents of lightning amid inclement weather at different places in Mohadebpur and Porsha upazilas on Friday morning. In the first incident, six persons, including a paddy trader, four farmers and a van-cart puller were killed and 30 others injured at Swaraswatipur Paddy Market, one of the biggest paddy markets of the area, under Mohadebpur upazila at 7:30 am, reports BSS. The tragic incident occurred amid stormy weather and thunderstorms when hundreds of traders and farmers were engaged in trading paddy at Swaraswatipur Paddy Market that sits on every Friday in the morning and ends at noon. Five persons were killed on the spot in the incident while one injured farmer succumbed to his injuries later at Mohadebpur Upazila Health Complex (MUHC). The deceased are paddy trader Azizur Rahman, 40, of village Faradpur under Sadar upazila, van-cart puller Hafizur Rahman, 42, of village Chowmashia, paddy seller farmers Shamsul Alam, 35, of village Uttar Gram, Yakub Ali, 20, of village Dashra, Afzal Hossain, 45, of village Bhebri and Saheb Ali, 40, of village Bandail under Mohadebpur upazila in Naogaon. Upon receiving information from the locals, Mohadebpur Thana police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies, rescued the injured persons and sent them to MUHC. Later, five critically injured persons were shifted to Naogaon Sadar Hospital from MUHC as their conditions deteriorated. Talking to BSS, Officer-in-Charge of Mohadebpur Thana Enayet Uddin Relatives of the victims took the dead bodies while body of Saheb Ali, who died at MUHC, was handed over to his relatives. No case was filed in this connection with Mohadebpur police station, he added. Member of the Parliament from Naogaon-3 (Mohadebpur- Badalgachhi) constituency Salim Uddin Tarafder expressed profound shock at the sudden demise of six lives, prayed for divine blessings for the departed souls and early recovery of the injured persons. In another incident of lightning, a housewife was killed in village Patharghata under Porsha upazila in the district at 8 am amid similar inclement weather. However, her identity could not be known immediately.
