Cancellation of SUST dependent quota demanded

Former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have demanded the cancellation of dependent quota in admission into the varsity.

Sylhet came up with SUST anti-dependent quota movement with the demand at a press conference in Sylhet Press Club on Sunday afternoon.

They also declared to file a writ petition with the High Court if their demand is not met.

Earlier in the morning, the former students of the university submitted a memorandum to SUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

On May 12, the university approved dependent quota at its 184th syndicate meeting.

As per syndicate decision, the dependents of the university staffs can get opportunity of admission into the institution if they have 40% marks in compilation with the secondary and higher secondary examinations' results and written marks of the admission test.

The protesters said general students do not get chance to enroll into the university even after acquiring 45 to 50 marks in written examination. The university reputation will be at stake if it allows admission through the dependent quota.

When contacted with the vice chancellor, he said he would talk later as he was busy in a meeting.
