A touchstone-made, 47kg antique statue was recovered from the Kasemabad area in the Gournadi municipality here yesterday.
Gournadi police station OC Abul Kalam said day-labourers found the statue in the area at around 1:15pm, while they were re-excavating an old pond which belonged to Jalal Hawlader and they informed police. The statue is 27inches in height and 16inches in width.
Police recovered the statue and lodged a general diary, informing the higher authorities, the OC continued.
However, the locals claimed the statue to be one of Buddha.
When contacted, Afroza Khanam Mita, assistant director of the Department of Archaeology under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, said before examining the statue, it would be difficult to ascertain its proper value, identity, construction materials and age.
