At least eight members of a bridal party have been killed and 16 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a microbus in Fakirhat's Toyeb Ali Bottola area in the district on Saturday evening.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Akram Uddin, sub-inspector of Fakirhat police station, said: "The microbus carrying the members of a bridal party collied head-on with a local bus of Ruposhi Paribahan, leaving seven members of the bridal party killed on the spot and 17 others injured.
Later, one person died on the way to hospital. Of the injured, the condition of three bridal party members is critical," he added.
