'Ancient' statue recovered in Barisal

An “ancient” statue has been recovered from Kasemabad area under Gournadi municipality in the district on Saturday noon.

Witnesses said a group of labourers had been digging the land of one Jelal Haolader for making a pond around 1:15pm.

At one stage, they noticed the statue.

From the preliminary appearance of the statue, it was estimated by local people as the ancient statue of Buddha engrossed in meditation and made with touchstone.

Abul Kalam, Gournadi police station officer-in-charge, said: “After getting information, we recovered the 47 kg statue and lodged a general diary.”

Afroza Khanam Mita, assistant director, department of archeology, said: “Before examination, the value, identity, material and age of the statue cannot be ascertained.”
