Modi's Dhaka visit soon, Teesta on the cards

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first official destination is likely to be Dhaka where he might ink the much-awaited Teesta water-sharing deal, an Indian daily has reported.

The Teesta water-sharing accounted a substantial part of the telephone conversation between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Modi, the Business Standard reported citing anonymous diplomatic sources.

Dhaka Tribune contacted the prime minister's information affairs adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury after the news was published onWednesday.

“Our prime minister invited Narendra Modi to visit Bangladesh during the telephone conversation,” he said. “They talked about several bilateral issues.”

The two prime ministers talked about taking the relation between Dhaka and Delhi to new heights, he added without being specific.

“During his visit to Bangladesh, it is natural that discussions will concern Teesta water-sharing deal and the land boundary agreement,” the official added.

“One can see from Modi's recent comments that he is planning to keep Pakistan and Bangladesh on top in the list of his countries to visit first,” he said.

The Business Standard report said Modi considered Bangladesh as his “second home.

The Teesta water-sharing deal was expected to be inked during Manmohan Singh's Dhaka visit on September 2011. But, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee got in the way.
