Residents cried out for uninterrupted power supply at Ward No 28, 29 and 30 of Barisal City Corporation yesterday morning.
At a human chain rally, residents claimed the power supply in the total area was disrupted on Thursday afternoon, when a nor’wester lashed the region.
The three wards had since then remained totally out of electricity supply for four days in a row. On Sunday evening, power supply was restored, but frequent disruptions had been continuing, they said.
On May 10, a memorandum was handed over to the executive engineer of the West Zone Power Distribution Company but that did not work out, they pointed out.
Even during regular times, power is not supplied here consitently. Power outage or low voltage is a regular sight, said Aftab Hossain, president of Motor Workers Union and City Sramik League.
Power outage usually continues here for hours every day and many times for a day, added Aftab, also a former Union Parishad chairman.
Executive Engineer (division-2) AKM Tariqul Islam of the company admitting the power outage said, “We are trying our best to improve the situation.”
He also blamed the battery-operated three wheelers for the power outage, saying those locally-assembled vehicles eat into huge power every day.
The residents, however, warned the authority of launching a tougher movement if the demand was not met by the authority immediately.
They also handed over the divisional commissioner a memorandum yesterday with the demand for uninterrupted power supply in the three wards.
The human chain was formed by the residents under the banner of ‘Kashipur Elakar Bidyut Sarbaraho Samosya Nirosan Committee’ (committee for solving the electricity supply problem of Kashipur area).
Local ward councilors, elite people, among others, spoke at the human chain.
