A police constable and a polling officer, who were on duty in the upazila parishad poll in Comilla, have been killed and 18 others injured in separate road crashes in the district on Monday.
Comilla district election officer Rashedul Islam has confirmed the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune.
The deceased were identified as police constable Hasan, 35, and polling officer Quamrunnahar.
Rashedul said: “The accident took place when the Comilla-bound pick-up van, carrying polling instruments and the on-duty personnel of Comilla sadar upazila parisad poll, turned turtle on by-pass road of Gomti River in Subarnapur area under the upazila at 7pm, leaving police constable Hasan dead on the spot.”
A presiding officer, three assistant presiding officers, a female polling officer, five police and eight Ansar personnel were injured in the accident.
The injured were admitted to Comilla Medical College and Hospital.
In another road crash took place in Ratanpur area on Comilla-Laksam road under Comilla sadar south upazila at 7am, leaving a female polling officer dead.
Deceased Quamrunnahar was an assistant teacher of Chashapara Primary School of the upazila and wife of Md Salim, of Keshanparh village.
She was heading to Alampur Primary School polling centre with a CNG-run auto rickshaw to carry out her duty as polling officer.
The CNG-run auto rickshaw upturned when a truck hit it in the area, leaving her dead on the spot, Rashedul said.
The sixth and the final phase of the upazila parishad polls were held on Monday in 12 upazilas, including Comilla sadar upazila.
