Final phase polls end, counting on

Vote counting of the sixth and the final phase of the upazila parishad polls in 12 upazilas is underway.

The voting ended at 4pm on Monday that began at 8am.

Out of 746 polling centres, voting in two polling centres in Comilla were postponed and one was suspended in Comilla following violence, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has said at a press conference at the Election Commission Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The upazilas are Rangpur Sadar, Kaunia, Gangachara, Pirgacha in Rangpur district, Kamarkhand in Sirajganj, Gazipur Sadar, Adarsha Sadar and Comilla Sadar (South) in Comilla and Basail in Tangail. The newly formed upazilas are Taltoli in Barguna, Kalukhali in Rajbari, Bijoynagar in Brahmanbaria.

Narayanganj Bandar Upazila Parishad election was postponed earlier following a High Court order. The election to newly-formed Patuakhali’s Rangabali upazila will be held on June 19.

A total of 182 candidates, including rebel candidates from the Awami League and BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Party, are contesting in these 12 upazilas.

Of them, 64 candidates are contesting for the chairman post, 69 for vice-chairman and 49 for the women vice-chairman posts.

According to the Election Commission, a total of 1,845,133 voters will cast their votes in the polls where 930,046 are women.

The commission has also set up 746 polling centres and 4,930 polling booths for holding the polls.

The first phase of polls for 97 upazilas were held on February 19, the second phase for 116 upazilas was held on February 27, the third phase for 81 upazilas was held on March 15, the fourth phase for 91 upazilas was held on March 23 and the fifth phase for 73 upazilas was held on March 31.
