Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) yesterday fixed the Bangladesh Standard Time in order to maintain a standard uniform time with the world and develop the e-governance system.
The time set by using Rubidium Atomic Clock through Global Positioning System will be telecasted across the country through the National Data Centre situated in Bangladesh Computer Council Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon. From now on, the standard time of Bangladesh can be checked visiting the website www.time.gov.bd.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, while inaugurating the standard time at the BSTI auditorium, said: “It is a historical event for Bangladesh.”
With the expansion of the use of information technology, trade across the globe has been increasing through the electronic system. “So it is inevitable to harmonise the time with the world.”
Earlier, the Bangladesh Computer Council strongly urged the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to give responsibility to BSTI for fixing the standard time and broadcast it throughout the country.
The European Union and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation assisted the BSTI to fix the time.
