Interns, DU students scuffle at DMCH

The authorities of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital formed a four-member probe body yesterday to investigate the scuffle between the Dhaka University students and the hospital interns which occurred on Tuesday.

Professor Dr Feroz Khan of the Nephrology Department will head the probe team which is comprised of DMCH Assistant Director Md Shahidullah and two other physicians. The committee has been asked to submit their report within five working days.

DMCH Deputy Director Dr Mushfiqur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the committee will try to find the reason behind the fight.

He said Dr Mustafizur Rahman, director of the hospital, will meet the press today.

Although all the print and electronic media have reported that the incident occurred between the interns and Dhaka University students, this is wrong according to Dr Musfiqur, who said the scuffle took place between an honorary doctor and DU students.

Security has been heightened after the incident. Extra police have been deployed in the hospital and its emergency services have been restored.

The interns at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital engaged in a clash with some Dhaka University students on Tuesday regarding trivialities and thereby brought the medical care at the DMCH emergency ward to a halt for more than three hours.

They also assaulted ATN News reporter Imran Hossain Sumon and cameraman Ataur Rahman Himel while they were attempting to record the occurrence.

The interns also broke the reporter’s camera when he entered the infirmary to cover the situation.

Dhaka University authority has also formed a four-member probe body to investigate the incident.
