Two persons died and a woman sustained serious injuries in Sutrapur and Chawk Bazar areas as nor’wester swept over the capital in the early hours of yesterday.
Officer-in-Charge of Sutrapur police station Md Khalilur Rahman said at midnight Monoranjan Shaha, 45, died on the spot in sleep when a wall had collapsed on him and his wife at Laxmibazar.
Monoronjon was a shop employee of a cycle shop at Bongshal. His wife Mitu Saha, 35, was admitted to Mitford Hospital in a critical state.
A nephew of the dead victim Sagar Shaha told reporters that a portion of a wall of an adjacent eight-storey under construction building fell of the roof of their one-storey building during the storm.
“The one-story building was old and could not bear the weight of the wall which fell from the eighth floor. Breaking the roof, it fell on sleeping Monoronjon and Mitu. They have a two-year-old son who was sleeping aside, but the brick did not hurt him,” he said.
After the couple was rushed to the hospital, doctors declared Monoronjon dead on arrival. Doctors said, Mitu’s condition was critical.
In the meantime, Nurul Alam, 65, died at Chawk Bazar around 12:15am when a brick fell on his head during the storm.
The incident took place in front of a beetle leaf selling shop when he, after taking supper went there to bring cigarette. Police and locals said, there was an under construction building nearby. The brick might have fall from there.
No cases were filed in these connections.
