Police-DU students clash injures 5

At least five people, including four policemen have been injured in a clash between Dhaka University students and the law enforcers in Nilkhet intersection on Friday afternoon over assaulting a DU student.

The injured are Mozammel Haque Bipul, student of Economics Department of DU, Newmarket police station Sub-Inspectors Shamim, Hanif and Iftekhar, Constable Shamim and Ansar member Shobuj.

Police and DU students said Mukit, a second year student of Bangla Department and resident of S Rahman Hall, and Newmarket police station ASI Saifullah engaged in an altercation over a trivial matter in Nilkhet area around 2pm.

At one stage of quarrel, ASI Saifullah slapped Mukit and took him to the police station along with his two friend, who came to help the DU student.

Hearing the news, the students of S Rahman Hall went to the police station and locked into clashes with the law enforcers, leaving the five people injured. The student also vandalised the gate and bill board of New market police station, said police officials.

Later police released the detained students, said DU students.

Dhaka University Proctor Amzad Ali said: “We heard about the incident. Necessary steps will be taken in this regard.”

New market police station Officer-in-Charge Iyasir Arafat said: “The injured have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment.”
