Sundarganj chairman, deputy arrested

The newly elected chairman and vice chairman of Sundarganj upazila, Gaibanhda, have been arrested in murder cases on the day of their swearing-in.

Chairman Majedur Rahman and Vice Chairman Abu Soaliman both emerged victorious in the recent upazila parishad poll under the banner of Jamaat-e-Islami.

They were arrested on Monday morning in two separate cases of murder, Sundarganj police station Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Hoque said.

Majedur Rahman was arrested over the killing of Rajshahi University Chhatra League leader Mamun. Meanwhile, Solaiman was charged with the murder of a policeman.

“They appeared at the office of Rangpur divisional commissioner in the morning for swearing-in as chairman and vice chairman,” the OC said.

“We received information and arrested them from the office premises with the help of Rangpur Kotwali police station,” he added.
