The recent rise of water level in the Teesta river in Bangladesh part was a major “diplomatic success” of the Awami League government, said the members of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources.
They made the claim while holding the first meeting of the 10th Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday afternoon.
While speaking at the meeting, the committee members said the “water flow of the Teesta into the Bangladesh territory reached 3,000 cusec which can be marked as a success of the government.”
The meeting that was presided over by the committee chief, Ramesh Chandra Sen, has also recommended the ministry to convert the already written draft about Teesta river between India and Bangladesh into a treaty.
The meeting emphasised on the dredging of the major rivers in the country and elaborately discussed about the matter.
The committee also urged to take immediate action to save the Kopotakkho river. The District commissioner concerned has also been asked to take necessary steps in this regard.
Water Resource Minster Anisul islam Mahmud, Secretary of water resource ministry Dr. Jafar Ahmed Khan were present among others in the meeting.
