Abducted Jamaat leader found dead

The body of an abducted Union Parishad member and a front-line upazila Jamaat-e-Islami leader has been found in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 40, son of late Mohammad Ali Mondal from Kotchandpur upazila, police said.

Azad was the running Union Parishad member of Elangi union in Jhenaidah Sadar and brother of Kotchandpur vice chairman and Jamaat Secretary Mohammad Moabiya.

Kothcandpur police station Officer-in-Charge Fazlur Rahman said he was a front-line leader of the Jamaat in Kotchandpur upazila.

Abul Kalam was abducted on Friday night from his residence, Jhenaidah police Additional Superintendent Mohammad Hasanuzzaman said.

“Later his bullet-hit body was recovered from Mamunshia Bakultala area on Monday morning after locals spotted the body and informed police.”

Enmity within his village might have been the motive behind the murder, he said. However, he did not say who abducted the man and why.

There was at least nine cases including murder and vandalism against Abul Kalam at Kotchandpur police station, he added.

The body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for post mortem examination. No case was lodged with the police in regard to this incident.
