5 hurt in Gangni blasts near polling centre

Five people have been injured in crude bomb explosions near a polling centre in Meherpur.

The injured are Boshir Uddin, 45, Ahsan Ali, 45, Bodrudozza, 20, Marfot Ali, 35, and Moin Uddin Boshir.

Boshir has been admitted to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, while the others have been given primary treatment.

The incident took place near Keshobnogor Primary School soon after the voting for the upazila poll started at the centre in Gangni upazila in the morning.

Security in-charge of the polling centre Sub-Inspector Abdul Jalil confirmed about the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “The situation has been brought under control in the area. Members of police and army are patrolling the area.”

Local sources said Awami League leaders had stopped the 19-party alliance members from entering the polling centre at Keshobnogor Primary School before the election began.

Later, the members of both the sides took position near Bholadanga-Keshobnogor village. Four to five cocktails were exploded at that time, leaving five people injured.

Meanwhile, around 20 to 25 crude bombs were exploded in the nearby areas.

Following the incident, BNP leaders and activists attacked the residences of Awami League activists Liakat Ali and Shahbul Islam, leaving the two ruling party activists injured.

BNP’s Chairman Candidate Murad Ali said: “Awami League members stopped the 19-party alliance members from entering the polling centre and exploded four to five crude bombs targeting them.”

Denying the allegation, Awami League’s Chairman Candidate Moklesur Rahman Mukul said: “BNP has led to such incident because they know they are going to lose in the vote.”
