Tribunal gives closing order on Yusuf's case

The International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday has decided to close the tribunal proceedings in the war crimes case against Jamaat-e-Islami leader AKM Yusuf, who died on Sunday.

Tribunal 2 passed the order on Wednesday afternoon, three days after the war crimes accused died, after suffering a brain haemorrhage caused by old-age complications.

In its order, the tribunal asked the inspector general, prison, to submit the full text of the autopsy report with it.

While ordering the conclusion of the case proceedings, the tribunal said it was a matter of disappointment that both the accused and the victims in the case could not get the justice.

The tribunal also asked the authority concerned to preserve the case documents.

He was arrested on May 12 following an arrest warrant issued by the tribunal 1. He was sick and several times sought bail from the tribunal, however his appeal was rejected and the tribunal ordered jail authorities to ensure proper treatment of the accused.

Yusuf, 87, faced 13 charges of crimes against humanity.

The senior nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat was indicted on August 1 last year for the crimes he had committed in the Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira areas during the 1971 Liberation War.

After the war, he had been arrested and being tried under the Collaboarators Order of 1972. However, he was released along with over 11,000 collaboartors after the law had been revoked on December 31, 1971.
