‘Vow to establish rule of law fulfilled’

The pledge of Sheikh Hasina government of establishing the rule of law has been fulfilled through the verdict of the sensational 10-truck arms haul case, Law Minister Anisul Huque has said.

The minister made the statement in his instant reaction regarding the verdict.

He said the verdict in the sensational 10-truck arms haul case was positive.

He claimed that it was found in the investigation that the hi-ups of the then government were involved with the incident. It was an initiative to inspire the terrorism and terrorists.

“The criminals who are involved with such offense would have to think further before committing such crime after the verdict that was given against the criminals. The court has given the verdict considering the evidences and statements of the accused,” he added.

When asked about was the incidents a threat for the sovereignty of our country, the minister said, “It was possible to set a mini-cantonment by the arms which were hauled. Who brought and for whom, it was also disclosed then.”

“It might disrupt the relation between Bangladesh and that country, for which the arms were brought, if it was possible to reach the arms to those persons for whom it was brought,” he claimed.

He also said that the-then government had a planning to cover the incident and relief the miscreants who brought it. They might be inspired to do it again, if the government did that.

A Chittagong special court has sentenced 14, including two ministers -- Matiur Rahman Nizami and Lutfozzaman Babar -- of the then BNP government, to death in arms smuggling case of the 10-truck arms haul on Thursday afternoon.

The same 14 convicts were awarded life term imprisonment in the arms case.
