‘India pleased with govt steps for minority’

Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran met the law minister and was said to have expressed satisfaction towards the government’s actions for the minority community.

Law Minister Anisul Haque briefed the media after holding the meeting with Pankaj Saran at his ministry office on Thursday.

The Indian envoy was satisfied with the immediate initiatives taken to prevent attackers and the rehabilitation of the victims, Asnisul Haque said.

Regarding the High Court order to publicise the Sahabuddin Commission report on the post-polls attack on minorities in 2001, he said: “I have given my word to take initiative on the issue before the court order. It will be taken as per my commitment.”

However, the minister remained aloof on when the report will be published. “You will know about it soon.”

The minority community, in several parts of the country, came under attack after the 10thparliamentary elections were held on January 5.

Similar attacks were also carried out during the elections in 2001.

Several quarters have condemned the attack on minority communities. The government has warned of sparing no one involved with such activities.

Also, ties with India will not be affected over a recent statement of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the minister asserted. “The two countries have a good relation.”

The relationship between the two countries will be stronger than before in the future, the Indian envoy assured according to the law minister.
