2-day remand for Inqilab reporter

A Dhaka court granted two-day remand in police custody for reporter Ahmmed Atiq and sent two other journalists of daily Inqilab to jail for a “fabricated” report.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashikur Rahman passed the order on Monday morning after hearing separate remand and bail plea petitions.

The judge dismissed bail pleas for Inqilab News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi and Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and sent them to prison.

Police had sought five days to grill in custody reporter Ahmmed Atiq. Defense lawyer Syed Ahmed Gazi had pleaded for bail for the three Inqilab employees.

The judge passed the order after hearing.

The three journalists were detained on January 16 for producing a “fabricated” news regarding the presence of Indian military inside Bangladesh territory.

The foreign ministry slammed the news as baseless and fabricated. Later, the daily had apologised for producing the information.

The three were shown arrested in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006. The press of daily Inqilab was sealed off.

Days after the incident, the information minister said that a watchdog will be formed soon to monitor the private media houses.
