Russia notes AL win, regrets BNP boycott

The Russian Federation has noted Awami League’s win and regretted BNP’s boycott of the 10th parliamentary polls held on January 5.

The Russian Foreign Ministry made the observation in a statement on January 9, four days after the polls.

Regarding Awami League’s win the Russian statement read: “On the 5 January, parliamentary elections were held in Bangladesh. The National League [Awami League] won.”

“It is regrettable that the voting was put under boycott by main opposition [BNP] forces of the country.”

The 10th Bangladesh general elections were held on January 5 amid boycott of the then main opposition BNP. 283 MPs, who were elected in the 10th, took oath on Thursday morning.

The statement also confirmed Russia’s “readiness to continue constructive partner cooperation with the government which will be formed on the basis of the will of the Bangladeshi voters.”

However, Russian Foreign Ministry statement did not mention if the country had found the new Bangladesh cabinet, that is to be sworn-in on Sunday, would represent the will of the Bangladeshi voters.

The Russian government also urged the government and the opposition to follow the constitution to maintain internal political stability and democratic process.

“At the same time, we hope that the authorities and the opposition will not overstep the boundaries of the constitutional field to ensure internal political stability and strengthen the democratic institutes of friendly Bangladesh,” reads the statement.
