India: Bangladesh polls ‘constitutional requirement’

The Indian government has deemed the Bangladesh's 10th parliamentary elections a “constitutional requirement.”

Syed Akbaruddin, official spokesperson of India's Ministry of External Affairs, reiterated the stance of the government on Monday a day after the national polls, reports dnaindia.

"Elections in Bangladesh were a constitutional requirement. They are a part of the internal and constitutional process of Bangladesh," the ministry spokesman said.

He added: "The democratic processes must be allowed to take their own course in Bangladesh," the spokesperson said.

The external affairs ministry also said while it was for the people of Bangladesh to "decide their own future and choose their representatives, violence cannot and should not determine the way forward".
