Rail communications with Sylhet was severed from the country after two carriages of a container train derailed in Habiganj on Tuesday afternoon.
The train derailed near Rashidpur area around 4:15pm, Bangladesh Railway Assistant Director Sayedur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
“A rescue train is on its way from Akhaura junction. It will take upto three more hours to restore the lines,” he said around 7:30pm.
The official could not elaborate on the cause of derailment. It was not clear if the incident was an act of sabotage like those committed in recent times.
Railway communications have been a target in recent times during agitation programmes of the main opposition BNP ahead of January 5 elections.
