10 injured in Hizb ut-Tahrir-police clash in capital

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the activists of the banned Islami militant organization Hizb ut-Tahrir and the police in the capital’s Segun Bagichha, Press Club and Motijheel areas on Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said the banned outfit activists brought out two separate processions from High Court Mosque and Segun Bagicha Mosque towards the Muktangon through the National Press Club sometime near 1:30pm.

A clash ensued when police intervened with the procession which was leading to a gathering at the Press Club.

Hizb ut-Tahrir men hurled brick chips at the policemen, to which the police responded by charging at them with batons and firing blanks to bring the situation under control, an eye witness Foez, a staff member of the Dhaka Tribune, said.

At one point the activists dispersed and launched attacks from different lanes, roads and behind certain buildings in Segunbagicha, Paltan, Bijoynagar, BaitulMukarram National Jam-e-Mosque and adjacent areas, leaving 10 people injured.

The police were able to nab some 21 activists from the spot.

Of them, 12 of the activists were detained from a building near the Dhaka Reporters Unity.

Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Shahidul Islam confirmed the detention of the 12 Hizb ut-Tahrir activists.

He also disclosed that they had seized banners, posters and leaflets of the banned outfit.
