Two minor girls died in Kurigram after being affected by pneumonia as the cold intensified in the northern district.
Jarina, 2, of Char Ramniasa village under Ulipur upazila, and Aduri, 3, of Char Kolakata village, died in the last 3 days.
Children are getting pneumonia and diarrhoea as the intensity of cold has severely increased in last three days.
Poor people of nine upazilas of the district, especially the day labourers, women and children have been suffering from the cold spell.
Children and old people are coming daily at the upazila health complexes to get medical treatment.
Hospital sources said more than 200 children and old people took medical treatment in the last five days for cold related diseases, and more than 50 children got admitted in different hospitals.
Mostofa Kamal, a resident doctor of Ulipur Health Complex, said the number of patients has been increasing for the last couple of days.
However, Nazrul Islam, resident doctor of Kurigram Sadar Hospital, said no patient was admitted at the sadar hospital with cold related diseases.
But he added that the intensity of cold is severe in other upazilas then the sadar, but patients cannot come to the sadar hospital from remote places as continuous hartals and blockade programmes are going on.
Dhaka Meterological Department said the temperature may fall all over the country especially in the northern region of the country in the next one or two days.
