Banks have loaded their ATM machines again after police have made special security arrangements for them.
Following a number of incidents of vandalism of ATM booths around the country in the recent political unrest, most commercial banks decided not to keep cash in the Automated Teller Machines, especially in the capital.
As a result, people, who have got used to taking out the required money from ATM machines instead of cashing cheques at bank branches, faced a lot of trouble over the last few days.
The Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday requested the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to enhance security for banks for carrying money to refill ATM machines.
The central bank yesterday provided Tk500 crore to the banks, which was deposited in their accounts for the refilling.
“We got special security from DMP yesterday to carry money to the ATM booths. We could not refill all empty ATM machines because we got the money from Bangladesh Bank just today. Loading all the machines is a lengthy process,” said Dutch-Bangla Bank Vice-President Iqbal Hossain.
The Dutch-Bangla Bank operates the highest number of ATM booths in the country.
He said: “The loading activities will continue today [yesterday]. After the blockade is over, we will launch full-fledged money loading activities.”
