US official Nisha Desai coming to Dhaka

US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal will make her maiden visit to Bangladesh this month.

The visit comes at a time when a political standoff is continuing between major political parties over how the upcoming national elections should take place.

A note was issued by the US State Department's spokesman confirming the visit. The statement is available on the website.

The note stated: " She will discuss shared global, regional, and bilateral priorities with Bangladeshi Government, opposition, labour, and civil society leaders. While in Bangladesh, she will meet with government officials, political leaders, labour groups, and civil society representatives."

Desai will travel to Tokyo for the fifth US-India-Japan trilateral consultation on November 12, the note said. Discussions will highlight enhancing regional connectivity, economic prosperity, maritime security, and responses to natural disasters.

She will visit Dhaka after her trip to Tokyo.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan W Mozena, was busy meeting political leaders last month. He also flew to Washington earlier this month to meet his family, an official said.

Also earlier this month Indian media reported that US President Barack Obama instructed his officials to “ramp up talks” with New Delhi on the political crisis in Bangladesh.
