Ashuganj to get new gas compressor in November

The Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL) will commission a new gas compressor station in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria next month to enhance gas pressure.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to inaugurate the gas compressor station.

“Hopefully the new compressor in Ashuganj will improve gas pressure significantly, particularly in the industrial areas,” Aminur Rahman, managing director of GTCL, told the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.

As the gas supply was hit by the weakness in pressure recently, the government gave special care to expedite installation work of Ashuganj compressor, said official sources.

Another compressor is expected to be in operation in Elenga, Tangail, in April next year.

“The compressors will raise gas supply in Ashuganj line to 1,500 cubic feet from 1,200 cubic feet, and in Elenga from 300 cubic feet to 500 cubic feet,” said GTCL managing director.

Earlier, the government signed agreements with Hyundai Engineering Company Ltd of South Korea to set up the two compressors.

The Tk8.54bn project is being funded jointly by the government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

GTCL managing director said the project was scheduled to be completed by July this year.

But a compressor for Ashuganj earlier dropped in the river Meghna at Ashuganj launch ghat while being unloaded from a barge, which had delayed the process, said officials.

The compressor was damaged badly, they added. For this, the authorities blamed “the negligence” and “the lack of proper care” of the contracting firm.

While contacted, MD of GTCL admitted it.

The project to install two gas compressors was revised three times since 2006.

The biddings for the works were cancelled twice.
