Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has issued strong warnings in the wake of recent government actions on Grameen Bank.
Speaking at a programme in Chittagong on Thursday, the microcredit guru hinted that the government's interference into the bank's operations will not be tolerated.
“We will break the hand trying to take hold of the Grameen Bank,” he said. “We will not tolerate this on the institution that the women of Bangladesh built with their own hands.”
Yunus was speaking at a women's programme arranged at Ladies Club.
Yunus, the managing director of the institution since its inception in 1983, was removed from his position in March 2011 for age-related reasons.
He had taken up the matter to court, but in vain.
The government has recently made some changes that will hold Grameen Bank answerable to the central bank.
Yunus called out the move as a tug of war against him.
