Wife terms tribunal a ‘puppet of government’

Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s wife Farhat Quader Chowdhury on Tuesday claimed that they had known beforehand they would not get justice from the tribunal as it was a “puppet of the government.”

The family said they would file an appeal with the Appellate Division against the verdict seeking his acquittal.

The BNP Standing Committee member’s wife, sons Fayyaz Quader Chowdhury and Humam Quader Chowdhury and daughter Farzeen Quader Chowdhury as well as relatives were present in the courtroom when the verdict was delivered. But they did not look anxious.

After the pronouncement of the death penalty, Humam, who now runs the businesses of his father, told the Dhaka Tribune that they went to the court to watch “farce.” He also alleged that the government had stopped many of their businesses.

Before the judgement, he said his father would shout as usual. However, Salauddin Quader was seen satirising the judges all the time during the pronouncement of the verdict.

Humam said: “If the government changes, many things will occur.” Sister of the convicted war criminal Zeeba Khan told the Dhaka Tribune that India had a “role in the war crimes trial.”
