Home Minister MK Alamgir on Wednesday said some stray incidents of disorder had occurred at the readymade garment factories, but it was not very extensive.
He said: “There is no unrest in the export-oriented readymade garment sector at present.”
The minister made the comments while addressing a press conference on the law and order situation ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja.
He said: “Today most factories in Gazipur are operating.”
The workers’ continued their demonstrations for the fifth straight day in the capital and its suburban areas on Wednesday. Thousands of RMG workers took to the street and staged violent agitations in Gazipur on Saturday demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk8,000. Workers from other areas later joined in the agitation.
In the face of demonstration, RMG owners offered a monthly wage of Tk6000 for apprentice workers. Most workers in the area returned then to work.
However, around 500 garment workers took to the streets on Wednesday. More than 100 factories were shut in the face of demonstration.
Regarding the law and order situation during festival times, the minister said: “We will take adequate security measures during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja.”
The administration would put its best effort to safeguard the security of the people, MK Alamgir said.
Senior officials of the police department and ministry concerned were present during the meeting, among others.
