BINA invents salt tolerant rice varieties

The scientists of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) said the newly invented 71 varieties of different crops including rice and legumes, have contributed much in the field of agriculture.

The salt tolerant rice varieties developed by BINA would highly benefit hundreds of farmers in greater Mymensingh and southern part of the country, said the scientists while addressing the concluding session of the two-day workshop at its auditorium Sunday.

Every year the cultivable land in the country is becoming scarcer and now it is a big challenge for the agricultural scientists to sustain the present rate of production to meet the demand of the growing population, speakers said at the session.

They said the media could play a vital role to avail the four new varieties of rice developed by BINA, to the farmers.

The discussion highlighted how cultivation can be sustainable and profitable with limited irrigation facility. In addition, how it can cope with climate change.

The BINA scientists have so far produced different kinds of bio-fertilisers that are cheaper compared to chemical fertilizers.

The farmers can gain more profit through using these bio-fertilizers, said the speakers.

BINA’s chief scientific officers-Dr Md Tariqul Islam and Dr Hosneara Begum were the speakers among others.

Earlier, Dr M A Sattar, director general of BINA inaugurated the workshop.
