Two banned labour bodies win no objection to get fresh registration

The government has given no objection certificate to award fresh registration to two labour organisations in an effort to regain US GSP facilities.

The intelligence agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs Wednesday sent the no objection certificates to the Ministry of Commerce.

The organisations are Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity and Social Activities for Environment.

Earlier, the government banned the two organisations due to the labour unrest in the Export Processing Zones.

The US government spelt out a 16-point charter of action plan on July 19 and urged the government of Bangladesh to engage with it for the sake of reinstatement of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) that the Obama administration suspended on June 27 last over poor labour rights and safety standards.

As per the conditions set out in the US action plan, the social welfare ministry was looking into the issue of registering the two organisations.

On the other hand, the home ministry withdrew all criminal charges against labour leaders Babul Akhter and Kalpana Akter as per conditions in the action plan. It was also looking into the murder of labour leader Aminul Islam, sources in the ministry said.

When the action plan came to the commerce ministry, it sent a letter to the Prime Minister's Office apprising of the conditions set out for the export processing zones (EPZ). The PMO has been urged to look into the issues including freedom of association and collective bargaining rights.

US Ambassador Dan Mozena said last month the GSP is very crucial for Bangladesh not only for its economic benefits from the US but also for its gain from World Trade Organisation (WTO) for future duty and quota-free market access.
